The measurement of the hardness of water is of prime importance in the operation of boilers and many manufacturing operations, such as in the manufacture of food products.

The Sentinel Colorimetric Titrator duplicates the laboratory method of hardness analysis by titrating a sample with EDTA, using Eriochrome Black T ("EBT") as the indicator. An immersion fiberoptics reflectance probe is used to measure the absorbance of the colored solution.
The analyzer employs a dual wavelength procedure in which two wavelengths are established, based on the colors of the indicator complexes. The endpoint is marked by the disappearance of the Ca-/Mg-EBT complex, and the appearance of the EDTA-EBT complex. Therefore, at the endpoint the color changes from the characteristic blue color of the Ca-/Mg-EBT complex, to the pink-violet color of the EDTA-EBT complex. The analyzer is sensitized at the characteristic wavelengths of both of these complexes and the endpoint is derived by the difference of the absorbances of the two wavelengths; at the endpoint the difference passes zero.
The primary advantage of this technique is that since the difference changes far more rapidly than either of the absorbances individually, the endpoint is more clearly determined. Additionally, the dual wavelength method compensates for any minor turbidity in the sample solution.
